Bethan Garner, MA (Hons)

Senior Consultant (and Storyboard Designer) - E-mail

Beth grew up in Aldridge, West Midlands before attending the University of St Andrews where she graduated with an MA (Hons) in Economics. Her degree course provided a strong understanding of how to develop and apply theoretical economic principles. Modules covered included micro- & macro-economics, econometrics, 'environmental economics' and 'law and economics'. Through her final year dissertation Beth was able to specialise in labour market inequalities between high-skill and low-skill workers. Gaining a position on the Shell Step scheme provided Beth with the opportunity to research into "Social Housing and Sustainable Communities". This challenging project encouraged her to seek employment within the consultancy industry. Transport was an attractive sector because of its obvious underlying economic and social foundations, and the sheer variety of activities that it encompasses.

Beth took up her initial position with MRC McLean Hazel in October 2007 and also spent a year on secondment in Brussels.  Beth has developed a specialism in the Cities thread of MRCMH's work. She first started by contributing to the research and data analysis of city trends for the Siemens Megacities & Complete Mobility projects.  Thereafter Beth helped to develop the audit methodology used for City Audits including Vienna and Huainan.  More recently, she acted as Project Manager for the Siemens Complete Mobility Study of Canadian Cities with a focus first on the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, and later on Calgary and Edmonton. In September 2011, Beth started a part-time MRes (Master of Research) in Urban Studies at Heriot Watt University.
