Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

MRC McLean Hazel continues to be involved in a number of BRT projects. MRCMH has been able to draw on the wider BRT experience of the McCormick Rankin Corporation within Australia and Canada and apply this to projects within Europe.

One such commission was for the production of system reports that detailed characteristics of BRT systems operating in Europe (including a number in the United Kingdom) for inclusion in the NBRTI-led update of the Characteristics of Bus Rapid Transit for Decision-Making (CBRT), the primary BRT planning guidance published by the U.S. Federal Transit Administration.

Most recently MRCMH has been awarded commissions concerning reviewing potential BRT routes in Liverpool, Edinburgh and Belfast as well as conducting study tours of a number of French and Dutch BRT systems for Belfast City and Bus Éireann, the national bus company of the Republic of Ireland.

The Edinburgh Waterfront BRT scoping study includes investigation into the potential for an integrated BRT system between the forthcoming Edinburgh tram system at the city centre and the Edinburgh Waterfront Development at Granton. This development is one of the largest urban regeneration projects in Europe stretching from Leith to Granton harbour. The aim is to promote economic and social regeneration, as well as the physical redevelopment of North Edinburgh. The development plans include around 30,000 new homes over the next 30 years, as well as retail and commercial facilities, health and education services, a range of public spaces and the new Telford College.
