Bethan Garner is a Senior Consultant with MRC McLean Hazel. Beth grew up in Aldridge, West Midlands before attending the University of St Andrews where she graduated with an MA (Hons) in Economics. Her degree course provided a strong understanding of how to develop and apply theoretical economic principles. Modules covered included micro- & macro-economics, econometrics, ‘environmental economics’ and ‘law and economics’. Through her final year dissertation Beth was able to specialise in labour market inequalities between high-skill and low-skill workers. Gaining a position on the Shell Step scheme provided Beth with the opportunity to research into "Social Housing and Sustainable Communities". This challenging project encouraged her to seek employment within the consultancy industry. Transport was an attractive sector because of its obvious underlying economic and social foundations, and the sheer variety of activities that it encompasses.
Beth took up her initial position with MRC McLean Hazel in October 2007 and has recently returned from spending a year on secondment in Brussels. From the outset she has enjoyed her level of involvement in projects. Assignments have included development and analysis of transport prioritisation frameworks, and research into mobility & city trends for Siemens. Beth is enthusiastic about gaining a wide range of experience in transport, whilst continuing to develop her interest in economics.
Beth thoroughly enjoyed the experience of spending a year living and working in Brussels. Now that she is back in Edinburgh, she is looking forward to getting out into the Scottish countryside.
