James Bonner is a consultant with MRC McLean Hazel. Having grown up in Glasgow, he graduated in 2004 from the city’s University of Strathclyde with a BSc (Hons) in Technology and Business Studies- specialising in accountancy and manufacturing engineering. Upon graduating, he spent 2 years working with a major public transport operator in Glasgow, specifically in the areas of marketing and pubic communications, while also spending considerable time abroad undertaking some extensive independent travel.
Having harboured a long standing interest and passion for environmental issues, he decided to embark on a full-time post-graduate qualification to increase his knowledge in the subject- and completed an MSc in Environmental Studies at the University of Strathclyde in 2008. His studies considered such issues as the integration of the concepts of sustainability and environmentalism into planning and policy, measuring and assessing environmental impacts, and the dissemination of positive environmental regulation and business practice. Furthermore, he has achieved associate status with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
James’s interest in transport has arisen from his work experience- from which he gained first-hand experience of some of the internal issues and challenges faced in providing a public transport service- but also from his extensive travelling, where he has been the user of a vast, and varied, range of transport forms and systems. Travelling around, and between, developed and developing regions and cities across the world has given him an appreciation and understanding of the range of transport provisions across nations and cultures.
During his time at MRCMH James has contributed to a variety of projects including a number of local transport assessments and prioritisation exercises (particularly in the East of England and South East Queensland). He has furthermore assisted in projects relating to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and global ticketing systems. He is involved in the EU Commission research project CATCH- which aims to encourage European wide carbon-friendly travel choices across all sections of society. He has been developing aspects of MRCMH’s environmental policy, and working on the inception and adaptation of an environmental travel policy to reduce and mitigate the environmental impact of employee travel.
Other than his love of travel, James’s interests include reading from across a variety of fiction and non-fiction. In addition, he is a passionate spectator and participator in number of sports- including badminton, tennis, football, table tennis and cycling. As a native Glaswegian he is a keen football fan, but is aware that as he has now moved to Edinburgh he will be required to brush up on his knowledge of the game which involves chasing an egg-shaped ball- having only ever attended a single rugby match- doing so when he visited New Zealand.
